Beelden aan Zee exhibition: Fathers and Sons - Succession in Dutch sculpture
Museum Beelden aan Zee presents a new collection, entitled Fathers and Sons - Succession in Dutch sculpture. on exhibit from 25 June until 10 October 2010.
For its major summer exhibition, Museum Beelden aan Zee asked fifteen leading Dutch sculptors to name one of their younger colleagues with whom they felt most affinity. Their responses to this fascinating question are the subject of the new exhibition, Fathers and Sons - Succession in Dutch sculpture.
Based on an original concept devised by sculptors Shinkichi Tajiri (1923-2009) and Piet Slegers (1927), Fathers and Sons takes an extraordinary look at the relationship between three successive generations of Dutch sculptors. The first generation was born between 1910 and 1930, the second between 1930 and 1950, and the third during the period 1950-1970.
The question was put first of all to five sculptors from the oldest generation. Alongside Tajiri and Slegers, these were: Ben Guntenaar (1922-2009), Carel Kneulman (1915-2008) and Carel Visser (1928). Their respective choices were: Henk Visch (1950), Paul Kubic (1940), Berend Bodenkamp (1942), Gerard Höweler (1940) and Joep van Lieshout (1963). The second generation was then asked the same question, and their choices were Paul de Reus (1963), Mathieu Knippenberg (1950), Hieke Luik (1958), Gerard van Rooij (1954) and Zoro Feigl (1983).
In art history, sources of inspiration are usually sought by looking back to the past and to earlier generations. In this case, the roles have been reversed and it is the older generation that is actually looking forward.
This exhibition features a wide variety of styles and art movements, ranging from abstract expressionism in the spirit of Cobra to contemporary figurative and poetic realism. Fathers and Sons offers a brilliant kaleidoscopic overview of the huge variety seen in Dutch sculpture over the last 65 years.
