Architecture Day: The Secondhand City
Architecture Day on Saturday, 26 June offers a unique opportunity to visit striking buildings which are not usually open to the public. The theme of this year’s national event is ‘The Secondhand City’. Cycling tours and helicopter rides are the highlight of this year's Architecture Day.
Between 11.00 and 16.00, the public are invited to visit a number of locations in The Hague which have been recycled or reinvented.
Industrial sites such as the RAC Hallen (pictured right, top) and Fokker Terminal, former schools turned into apartments such as De Grote Pyr (pictured right, middle) and Goudenregenhof (pictured right, below), retro architecture on the Beeklaan and in Vroondaal, the ‘spruced up’ Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VVS), and areas which offer the potential for
urban regeneration such as the Gemeentelijk Industrie Terrein and Binckhorst are some of the locations that will be open for the occasion.
Two cycling tours will be taking place (in Dutch), at 10.30, 12.00, 13.30 and 15.00. Please note, these tours require you to bring your own bicycle along.
The Empty City Tour, led by architect Iris Schutten and developer/architect Cihan Bugdaci, takes you through different empty buildings, speculates about their possible reuse and shows
what the changes and threats are for the Regentessekwartier.
During the Secret Seducers Tour, architects Job Roos and Corine Keus and artist Wilma Marijnissen will show you the unexpected renewal potential for the Binckhorst area.
Take a breathtaking helicopter flight over The Hague during Architecture Day. The flights begin at 11.00 from Landgoed Vroondaal. Advance reservations are not required.
The price is € 38.50 per person. One flight can accommodate a maximum of four people. The flights are provided by Helicon Helikopter Services in a Robinson 44.
The closing event takes place at the RAC Hallen at 16.00.
Architecture Day is organised by the Architecture Day Foundation, the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA), the Municipality of The Hague, Stroom Den Haag and the Haags Architectuur Café (HaAC).
The General Information Point for Architecture Day will be open from 11.00 to 16.00 and is located in the Information Centre for Den Haag Nieuw Central at Koningin Julianaplein 7 (Central Station).
